History of the Texas State Flag:  Before Texas was a state, it was an independent nation known as the Republic of Texas from 1836 - 1846. The Republic of Texas won its independence from Mexico and was a nation encompassing all of present-day Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico. The current flag of Texas is actually the flag of the Republic of Texas. When Texas became the 28th state of the United States on December 29th, 1845, the national flag became the de facto state flag. However, this flag was never officially approved by the state legislature until 1933. Description of the Texas State Flag:  The Texas flag is an equally proportioned flag consisting of three large stripes of red, white, and blue. There is one "lone star" in the blue stripe. The blue vertical stripe is 1/3 of the length of the hoist and the two horizontal stripes equally divide the remainder of the flag. The blue color represents loyalty, the white represents strength, and the red represents bravery.

Flagnations Trivia for Texas:  Once Texas was no longer an independent nation, but a state within the United States, they never officially approved a state flag. Technically speaking, the state of Texas was without an official flag from 1846 until 1933, with the passage of the Texas Flag Code.

Bonus Texas Trivia: It is urban legend that the Texas state flag is the only flag that can fly at the same height as the United States flag. People commonly mis-believe that because Texas was a former independent nation, it has the right to fly on equal footing with the U.S. flag. U.S. Flag Code states that any state flag may be flown on the same pole below the U.S. flag or can be flown at the same height as the U.S. flag, as long as it is on a separate pole and the U.S. flag is in the center. Texas Flag Code is in accordance with the U.S. Flag Code, therefore, this urban legend is false.
